5 Things You Shouldn't Put in Self-Storage

Having a storage unit can be a relief when you don't have room for everything at home or your business, but... what items aren't a good idea to store in there? Here are 5 of the most common things you shouldn't place in your self-storage unit:

Perishable goods or food

If the food or perishable goods are not properly packaged to prevent insects from getting to them (canned), it's better to store them somewhere else. Using self-storage can be dangerous if you forget this rule! Storage units should never be used to store food, including pet food. In an enclosed space, food left too long will rot, attracting insects and rodents with its smell.

Substances that are flammable or combustible

There are several items that can pose a risk to your stored items as well as the facility, such as gas, paint, petrol, oil, cleaning solvents, or compressed gases. In self-storage, nothing that is highly flammable is allowed.

Plants

In a storage unit, plants would not survive and would probably attract bugs and pests. They need sunlight (and water) to survive. Don't put your plants in storage, give them away, or plant them outside if you can't take care of them.

Toxic substances

Chemicals, radioactive materials, biological agents, toxic waste, propane tanks, asbestos, etc., are all potentially hazardous substances that cannot be stored in self-storage facilities.

Deeds, bonds, and currency

It is much better to store items like these in a safe deposit box at a bank. It is recommended to store these items somewhere with a higher level of security, even though our storage units are safe and secure.

Using self-storage can be a lifesaver, but it's important to be considerate not only for your items but also for the other customers who use the store and the store operator. A self-storage unit can make your life a lot easier and give you more freedom when used properly.
